Morris Island
The Magazine Mound

Original scanLibrary of Congress
A great sodded mound fills the center of the plate with two men standing small on its crest, a revetted cut running past its foot and the masts of shipping just visible over the flat beyond.
Everything about the shape is deliberate: enough earth over the powder to swallow a shell, sloped enough to shed a hit, sodded to hold the sand against the wind. The two figures are the scale the photographer wanted.
