A Camp by the Inlet

Tents pitched in the dunes with a schooner's masts standing beyond them, a man paused at a tent door, gear piled in the sand. One of Haas & Peale's numbered plates from the siege summer of 1863 — the working rear of an island whose working front was a trench line.

The Library of Congress calls the camp unidentified and so does this site. What the plate documents doesn't need a unit number: the whole southern end of Morris Island turned into this — canvas, sand and supply — while the sapping went forward against Battery Wagner a mile up the beach.
