Headquarters in the Pines

A department commander's headquarters in the field was smaller than the title sounds: canvas, a table, a horse nearby, and the man to whom every report from the trenches came walking up the beach. The pines place this camp off the bare sand, at the green southern end of the island the bombardment never reached.
