A gun crew stands to its piece behind a stack of sandbags, handspikes and rammers held at the ready, a cross-braced frame in the foreground and the plate's emulsion torn away across the sky.

The damage is part of the object and is left as it is. What survives below it is the ordinary competence the siege ran on: half a dozen men who knew where to stand.
