The Mortar Battery

Two mortars sit low behind a sandbag revetment with their crews about them, a palisade of sharpened stakes running away to the left and a magazine mound closing the view at the right.

Mortars asked nothing of the ground but a level bed and something overhead to stop a fragment; the whole apparatus in this frame is sand, bags and timber. It is the least photogenic artillery of the war and did much of its steadiest work.
