Battery Reynolds, Mortars Against Wagner

The crews of Battery Reynolds stand ranked across their work — five 10-inch siege mortars against Battery Wagner, as the Library of Congress titles it — gabions and fascines at their backs, Haas & Peale's signature at the plate's edge.

Mortars were the siege's patience: they could not breach, but they could make every hour inside Wagner cost something.
