The Gate of Fort Moultrie

The sally-port of Fort Moultrie, head on: a masonry arch with rusticated quoins, the brick above it battered and patched, a round shot perched on the gatepost pillar at the left like an ornament, and the dark passage running through the wall to the parade beyond.

A stone doorway is an odd survivor in a fort that the war rebuilt in sand. Everything either side of this arch was buried under earth and sod as the harbor's gunners learned what masonry was worth against rifled artillery; the gate kept its dressed stone because a fort still needs a front door. The commercial stereograph of this negative was sold under the same plain title, and the series it belongs to is dated March–April 1865.
