Brick Below, Sand Above

A brick-revetted wall crosses the frame, a wooden stair climbing it to a small white sentry box on the crest; below, a pyramid of round shot stands on the grass-edged terreplein, and a cart waits at the right. An albumen print from the April 1865 album page, its mount number in the 4300s with the last digits cut by the mount edge.

The picture is a section through the fort's whole history: the old fort's brick below, the war's sand and sod above, and the housekeeping of a garrison — stairs, sentry box, stacked shot — holding the two together. It reproduces another of the unstaged negatives, and survives here only as this panel.
