Fort Putnam From the Parade

Across the swept parade of Fort Putnam: a gun on a wheeled carriage at the left, a heavy rifle on its chassis at the right, a palisade closing the middle distance and the sodded mounds beyond. Plate 3525, scratched at the corner.

The fort was Battery Gregg until the Confederates left the island on the night of 6–7 September 1863. Everything in this photograph — the carriages, the palisade, the swept sand — belongs to the garrison that took the name over and kept the guns firing on Charleston for another year and a half.
