What the record here is

It is a reading of original documents, made by people from photographic images of them. It is offered as a finding aid and a research resource, and it is not a substitute for the original. Every page cites what it was read from precisely enough to be checked, and checking it is encouraged.

Accuracy, and what it is not

Accuracy on this site is measured and published, not claimed. A sample of each transcribed set is read a second time, independently, and the disagreement rate is stated on the page beside the work it describes. Where a reading is uncertain it carries a question mark instead of a confident guess.

That measurement is a floor, not a guarantee. Two readers who make the same mistake agree with each other, and no sample finds every error. Before you rely on a reading in print or in research, check it against the image the row cites. The material is offered as it is, without warranty of any kind, and we accept no liability for a decision taken on it without that check.

Colorized photographs

A colorized image on this site is an interpretation, produced by us and labeled as such wherever it appears. It is not evidence of what a color was. The black-and-white master scan shown beside it is the record.

Corrections

If something here is wrong, please say so. Cite the page and the frame and it can be settled against the image.

The site is added to and corrected continually, and these terms may change with it; the date below is when they were last reviewed. They are governed by the laws of the State of South Carolina, United States of America, without regard to its conflict-of-laws principles.
