Everyone the federal census found in Charleston, read from the manuscript sheets: names, ages, occupations, birthplaces and households, with every line cited to its page.
1860
Ward 1 — 2,000 people in 342 households on sheets 1–50, enumerated 1–30 June 1860. In progress: about 63 sheets in all.
Planned
The remaining wards of 1860, then 1850 and 1870, which name every free person, and 1840, which names only the head of each household and counts the rest. Each will be read the same way: from the image, as written, cited to the frame, with its accuracy measured on a sample.
The enslaved population of 1850 and 1860 was recorded on a separate schedule without names. It will be presented as the record it is, by owner, with the count, and not as if it were a list of people it never named.
