The Palmetto Battery near Charleston, 1863
Confederate artillerymen posed with a field gun near Charleston.
Confederate gunners with their piece outside Charleston. The Library’s caption log for one of the copy negatives reads: Palmetto Battery, near Charleston, S.C. Photo by Cook.
Two dates matter here and the title carries both: photographed in 1863, printed twenty-odd years later. The card is a memorial object made in the 1880s; the negative is a wartime record. The catalog’s bracketed correction — 1861 [i.e. 1863] — is the Library fixing the card’s own mistake.
