The Confederate work on James Island, at the western side of the inner harbor. A mortar here threw the first shell of the war at 4:30 on the morning of 12 April 1861. Foster's combined attempt against it on 3 July 1864 failed in the creeks; the fort held until the evacuation of February 1865.
