E. & H. T. Anthony & Co.
The New York firm that published and distributed a great deal of what America saw of the war, including Charleston views made by other men. An Anthony imprint on a mount identifies the publisher; it does not identify the photographer.
Edward Anthony is named as publisher on the April 1861 Fort Sumter cartes de visite at the Metropolitan Museum of Art whose photography the museum attributes to Alma A. Pelot and Jesse H. Bolles. The same firm published stereographs in the Library of Congress’s Civil War stereograph collection, and it bought and sold George S. Cook’s work in the 1850s.
W. E. James of Brooklyn went to the Fort Sumter flag-raising in April 1865 on an Anthony assignment, by his collection’s account.
