Battery Simkins fired twenty-two shots from the Brooke gun with good effect; from Haskell, very few shells exploded, and every round from the double-banded 24-pounder rifle fell short of Battery Wagner even with a six-pound charge. Off the bar lay a French and an English sloop of war, watching.
