Robert E. Lee assumed command of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and East Florida the day after Port Royal fell, and rode the coast looking at works he judged mostly indefensible. Charlestonians called him the King of Spades for the digging he ordered. The line he laid out held until Sherman came at it from behind.

Captain Francis D. Lee reported that he had at last received a reply from Commodore Ingraham about materials for the marine torpedo ram, and enclosed the correspondence. Getting iron for the ram was harder than designing it.
