1861Port Royal

Beaufort is occupied

A naval party occupied Beaufort, found abandoned by its white population and full of people who had refused to go inland with them. It was the first Southern town taken and held by the United States, and it became the base from which everything against Charleston was afterward launched.

1863Morris Island

Terry takes command on Morris Island

Brigadier General Alfred H. Terry assumed command of the Federal post on Morris Island. Two months after taking Battery Wagner, the island had become a permanent gun platform pointed at Fort Sumter and at the city beyond it.
