Du Pont’s squadron steamed in an ellipse between Forts Walker and Beauregard, firing on each in turn, for about four hours. Both works were abandoned by mid-afternoon. The Union took a deep-water base sixty miles from Charleston and never gave it up — and every operation against Charleston for the rest of the war started from it.

An inspection report from the outposts on Sullivan’s Island came back with the remarks of Lieutenant Colonel Nelson. The Sullivan’s Island batteries — Moultrie, Beauregard, Marion, Marshall, Rutledge — were the working half of the harbor’s defense after Morris Island fell.
