Du Pont spent 6 November completing his soundings and waiting on weather while the Confederate garrisons of Forts Walker and Beauregard watched a fleet they could not fight. The attack went in the next morning.

Beauregard directed that 200 infantry be held ready at Fort Johnson every night, to be thrown into Fort Sumter if the enemy attempted the fort again. Since the boat attack in September, Charleston had treated a second assault on the ruin as a nightly possibility.
