1861Port Royal

Sounding the Port Royal bar

Federal gunboats crossed the Port Royal bar, sounded and buoyed the channel under fire from Commodore Tattnall’s small squadron, and anchored inside. The finest natural harbor on the South Atlantic coast was about to change hands, and Charleston’s whole strategic position with it.

1863Signals

A telegram from the chief signal officer

A telegram from Major Norris, chief of the Confederate signal corps at Richmond, was forwarded to General Ripley with instructions from the commanding general. The Charleston signal service intercepted and decoded Federal messages regularly, and Richmond wanted to know how.
