Battered by the Hatteras gale, Du Pont’s ships collected off Port Royal bar. The Confederates had two earthwork forts, some 40 guns between them and a handful of small steamers. Four days later the forts were gone.

Beauregard answered Ripley’s note announcing that another flag of truce had been received at Battery Marshall on Sullivan’s Island. Prisoner exchange, mail and the recovery of bodies all moved between the two armies under a white flag.
