The second day of the gale off Hatteras scattered the invasion fleet still further; the transport Governor foundered and her marines were taken off by the frigate Sabine in a feat of seamanship the navy talked about for years. The expedition arrived off Port Royal short of ships and on time.

Commander Stevens of the monitor USS Patapsco reported that for the past week he had been engaged, in co-operation with the batteries, in firing on Fort Sumter. The monitors took their turn at the ruin night after night through the autumn of 1863.
