Two weeks after Lincoln’s election, South Carolina’s legislature had called a convention, federal officeholders in Charleston were resigning, and the collector of the port and the district judge had given up their commissions. The state moved faster than any other, and it moved from Charleston.

Captain Valentine reported from Fort Moultrie that at quarter to five that morning “the enemy made an attack on Fort Sumter, with what force could not be ascertained. The night being dark” nothing could be seen from Sullivan’s Island. The boat demonstration was driven off.
