A Federal boat demonstration against Fort Sumter on the nights of 19 and 20 November. After September, the navy tested the fort’s alertness rather than its walls, and each time found the garrison awake.

Beauregard directed his chief engineer to make what arrangements were practicable for the defense of Fort Sumter’s west face. Each face of the fort had to be given its own protection as the walls came down one at a time.
