Gillmore forwarded to Washington a proposal for an advance on Branchville from the coast, noting that it would “at once transfer the theater of war into South Carolina” and that the idea had been argued over ever since the coast was occupied in November 1861. It was never tried from the coast. Sherman did it from Georgia fifteen months later.

Flag Officer Tucker ordered Chief Engineer Tomb of the Confederate navy to serve on a board convened to examine and test certain torpedo boats at Charleston. Tomb had been the David’s engineer on the night she struck the New Ironsides.
