The road to Branchville
Gillmore forwarded to Washington a proposal for an advance on Branchville from the coast, noting that it would “at once transfer the theater of war into South Carolina” and that the idea had been argued over ever since the coast was occupied in November 1861. It was never tried from the coast. Sherman did it from Georgia fifteen months later.
