The armed steamer George Washington was destroyed near Beaufort — a reminder that Confederate field artillery, hidden in the marsh grass along a bend, was a serious danger to any lightly built gunboat working the lowcountry rivers.

Five monitors inside this morning; only one blockader visible, perhaps because of the thickness of the weather. Ten shells were fired at the fort during the night and eight exploded over it. Air bursts over an open parade were the reason the garrison lived in casemates.
