Skirmishing on Folly Island, four months before it became the staging ground for the assault on Morris Island. Federal troops had begun quietly occupying the island’s southern end; the Confederates knew, and could not spare the men to contest it.

No correct observations. Two tugs lay at the picket station and two monitors abreast of the 2,500-yard buoy. At eight o'clock two large barges floated up the channel in the direction of Mount Pleasant, where the fort's officer supposed they would be secured.
