Anderson wrote to Beauregard acknowledging his letter and saying he “needed no denial” from him of an expression attributed to him. The two men — former instructor and former pupil at West Point — corresponded with elaborate civility for six weeks, and then Beauregard opened fire.

Beauregard forwarded to Richmond a report on a Federal raid, noting that Brigadier General Colston complained of the total inadequacy of the force at his command and could not have mustered five hundred men to defend the island attacked. This was the arithmetic of the Confederate coast in 1864: a hundred miles of creeks, and never enough men to hold two points at once.
