Ward Hill Lamon, Lincoln’s friend and unofficial emissary, visited Charleston and left Governor Pickens with the impression that Fort Sumter would shortly be evacuated. He had no authority to say so. When the relief expedition sailed a fortnight later, Charleston felt it had been deceived — and said so for the next fifty years.
