An inventory of what Charleston left behind
The Federal commander of the Northern District at Charleston reported the captured property: eight locomotives, forty-four railroad cars, four stationary engines, a dozen kinds of lathe, boring and slotting machines, a planer — and a Whitworth reamer for turning shot and shell. The city had been a war factory as well as a port, and it had not been able to move the machinery out.
