Anderson reported the batteries unusually vigilant in watching the harbor entrance overnight, a gun going up in battery No. 1, and ground being cleared for another on the sea beach. “They are evidently apprehensive that an attempt may be made to throw re-enforcements into this work.” They were right; the expedition was being fitted out in New York as he wrote.

The USS Massachusetts, off the Stono, reported striking a torpedo in Charleston Harbor the previous afternoon. A month after the city surrendered, the harbor was still the most heavily mined water in America, and clearing it took the navy the rest of the year.
