The Georgiana runs ashore
Chased by the blockading squadron on her maiden run, the iron steamer Georgiana — armed, and widely believed to be intended as a Confederate cruiser — was driven ashore off Long Island near Breach Inlet and scuttled by her own crew. Her cargo went down with her, and the wreck lay undisturbed off the Isle of Palms for more than a century.
