At seven in the evening Pemberton telegraphed President Davis: “Shall order three regiments from Savannah. Am drawing re-enforcements from there for Charleston also. The enemy is re-enforcing also.” Federal troops were ashore on James Island and both sides were feeding men into the fight.

A Federal expedition went from Fort Pulaski to Bluffton, on the May River, and burned most of the village. The lowcountry’s small towns were fought over and burned by both armies, and the ones that were not rebuilt afterward mostly never were.
