Skirmishing on James Island as Union troops came ashore in force from the Stono. For three weeks the Federals held ground within five miles of Charleston — closer than they would get again until February 1865 — and then threw it away in one morning at Secessionville.

Eleven Parrott shells during the night, four missing. “A negro on the steam-boat was severely wounded by fragment of one of them as she was approaching the fort.” The relief steamer had to come alongside a ruin the enemy fired at all night.
