Thirty-four shots at the fort, ten missing, and the flagstaff shot away twice again. “Private Moses Davis, Gist Guard, was struck by a fragment and died in an hour.” The Gist Guard Artillery was a Charleston company; its dead were buried in the city.

In the reorganization of commands after the surrender, Major General Quincy A. Gillmore was assigned to the Department of South Carolina. The man who had taken Morris Island and opened fire on Charleston in 1863 was now responsible for governing the state.
