Gillmore relieves Hunter
Brigadier General Quincy A. Gillmore superseded Major General David Hunter in command of the Department of the South. Gillmore had breached Fort Pulaski with rifled guns the year before, and he came to Charleston convinced he could do the same to Fort Sumter. He was right about the fort and wrong about what it would get him.
