The Federal withdrawal from James Island, begun on 28 June, ran through the first week of July 1862. Charleston had been threatened from the land and the threat had been thrown away by a single unauthorized assault. It would be more than two and a half years before Union troops stood on that ground again.

Special orders from the First Military District at Charleston directed an armed reconnaissance onto Little Folly Island the following evening. The Confederates knew something was happening behind the trees at the north end of Folly; they were never able to find out what, or in what strength, and they had no men to spare to force the question.
