Pemberton forwarded to the commanding officer of Fort Sumter a copy of a dispatch just received about the Federal withdrawal. For the next twelve months Fort Sumter was a quiet, intact, well-armed fort, and Charleston believed it could not be taken.

The Federal commander on Folly Island reported his batteries essentially finished — forty-seven guns and mortars dug in behind the sand ridges facing Morris Island — and added a small, revealing complaint: there was no officer present of sufficient rank or experience to command them.
