Affair at Port Royal Ferry

An affair at Port Royal Ferry on Independence Day 1862, three days after the last Federal troops left James Island. The line between the two armies in the lowcountry had settled where it would stay for two and a half years.

The last two regiments off James Island

Two regiments of Stevens’ division — the 100th Pennsylvania and the 79th New York — covered the Federal withdrawal from James Island on Independence Day 1862. The campaign that had come nearest to taking Charleston from the land ended in an orderly retreat.
