An officer reported on his errand to Wadmalaw Island under special orders from department headquarters. A week before the Federals landed on Morris Island, Charleston was still sending officers to look at the wrong islands.

A night boat attack on Fort Johnson and Battery Simkins went in late, disorganized and unsupported: only part of the force landed, and most of those who did were captured. A judge-advocate’s investigation followed. Fort Johnson — where the first shell of the war was fired — was never taken.
