Federal engineers began excavating emplacements and a magazine for four 10-inch siege mortars on the site of an unfinished Confederate work — the right wing of Battery O’Rorke. That night the garrison of Battery Wagner came out and raided the working parties.

“The firing this morning is from two guns in Wagner and one in middle battery; this last is the one supposed to have burst yesterday.” Two men of the 32nd Georgia are named as slightly wounded. The fort corrected its own reports as carefully as it made them.
