Work went on in the first parallel through the night, the engineer officers relieving one another at midnight. Almost all the labor on Morris Island had to be done in the dark; by day the ground between the lines belonged to Confederate sharpshooters with telescopic Whitworth rifles.

Forty shots in the night. Three guns firing from Wagner and the 200-pounders at Gregg and the middle battery. “The 100-pounder at middle battery I have reason to believe was burst this morning.” Heavy Parrotts burst regularly; the Federals lost guns almost as fast as the fort lost brick.
