Simkins and Gregg dueled from eleven in the morning until half past three. That evening General Hagood telegraphed from the Seventh Military District that the meat rations at his James Island depot had entirely failed. Charleston’s defense was running short of beef a full thirteen months before it ran out of ground to stand on.

Beauregard forwarded a commissary report to Richmond with an indorsement of his own: “I regret profoundly to be obliged again to bring this matter of the subsistence of the troops intrusted with the defense of Charleston to the attention of the War Department.” The men holding the harbor were going short of meat.
