A skirmish on Waccamaw Neck, up the coast toward Georgetown — the kind of small coastal affair that filled the Official Records’ summary of principal events for 1864 and never made a headline. Blockading vessels raided the rice plantations; Confederate pickets pushed them off; both sides reported a success.

The headquarters journal for 7 January 1864 runs to four sentences: the batteries on both sides silent, not a shot fired from daylight to dark, a few small parties repairing works on Morris Island, the fleet unchanged. Most days of a siege look like this one, and almost none of them reach the history books.
