The monitor USS Montauk bombarded Fort McAllister on the Ogeechee below Savannah — the first real trial of a monitor against an earthwork. She took hits without serious damage and did the fort little harm. Both facts were carefully noted in Charleston and in Washington, where an ironclad attack on Fort Sumter was already being planned.

Captain Culpepper with seven officers and a hundred men of Colquitt's brigade relieved Captain Elliott and the same number from the same brigade. Two shots were fired at the fort the day before and one missed. It was too hazy to see the fleet.

Skirmish at Ennis’ Cross-Roads. The Confederate cavalry screening the lowcountry could delay Sherman at a bridge or a causeway for an afternoon, and did so repeatedly through late January, but there was no force in South Carolina able to stop him.
