Elliott returned and resumed command, reporting two 32-pounders shipped to the city overnight, five shots fired at the fort and all of them striking, and that during his absence much of the water standing on the parade had been drained off. The interior of Fort Sumter was, by 1864, a wet pit inside a mound of rubble.
