Two Parrott shots struck the fort during the day and one at night. The Federals kept up their fire on “the wreck” from 30-pounder Parrotts at Battery Gregg and resumed slowly in the morning with two monitors joining in.

At Rivers’ Bridge two Federal divisions waded the flooded Salkehatchie bottom, some of it chest-deep and a mile wide, turned the Confederate flank and forced the crossing. It was the sharpest fight of the South Carolina march. With the Salkehatchie behind him, Sherman was loose in the middle of the state.
