The Federal post commander on Morris Island forwarded to department headquarters facts he had obtained — from deserters, prisoners and freedpeople coming out of Charleston. Almost everything the Union knew about the city’s defenses came out of the harbor in a rowboat.

Skirmishing at Buford’s Bridge and Angley’s Post-Office. The lowcountry railroads that fed Charleston were now within a day’s march of Federal cavalry, and the city’s supply had begun to fail before a single Union soldier came within sight of its steeples.
