Blockade duty off Charleston in February meant a gale-swept station on an open coast with no harbor to run for. The South Atlantic Blockading Squadron’s correspondence for the winter of 1862 is mostly boiler repairs, coal, and vessels blown off station — the conditions under which runners got in.
