A memorandum drawn up after a conference at Pocotaligo with Generals Walker and Hagood, setting verbal instructions down in writing. The Charleston and Savannah Railroad had to be defended by three brigades spread across a hundred miles of swamp.

The monitor USS Montauk caught the Confederate cruiser-turned-runner Nashville aground under the guns of Fort McAllister and destroyed her by gunfire. The monitor struck a torpedo coming out and had to be beached to save her — a warning about Charleston’s harbor that was noted and then set aside.
